Benefits
Technology
Electric narrowboats, once a concept, are now becoming more common. The possibility to have a large bank of batteries allows the use of more appliances that bring comfort and luxury to the user. Solar panels can also be easily fitted to replenish required energy for propulsion or hotel systems.
Eco-friendly
As well as using less harmful fuels, electric propulsion also helps protect the environment by reducing emissions, sound and odour pollution.
Savings
Maintenance is greatly minimised, and the frequency of repairs are reduced due fewer moving parts and the simplicity of electric design. Operation safety is greatly improved by the removal of flammable fuels and oils as well as low 48V options.
Why should I convert my narrowboat to electric?
Users should have total confidence in the conversion of electric propulsion. The Bellmarine product is proven and very reliable requiring minimal maintenance. There are Bellmarine systems installed in many narrowboats around the world.
Will there be enough power to use all the auxiliary systems and cruise?
Due to the high power consumption from all the individual systems used on a narrowboat, cruise range can be affected. There is however the possibility to increase the battery capacity or use a small genset to aid in battery replenishment.
Will electric propulsion allow me to manoeuvre the narrowboat easily?
Due to the instant torque response at the motor and the ability to have any rotation speed required, slow-speed manoeuvrability becomes much easier with electric propulsion.
What if my vessel does not have the space or weight allowance to have the necessary batteries onboard for the speed and power requirements?
It is possible to use a low emission genset as a range extender with the electric propulsion system. This would become a series hybrid setup where the genset charges the batteries when needed and the batteries power the motor. You can significantly increase the range of the vessel whilst maintaining low noise and emissions.
