Electric and hybrid propulsion for Aquaculture and Fishing

Electric and hybrid propulsion for Aquaculture and Fishing

Are you looking for an electric motor or a hybrid drive solution for your workboats? We can help.

Operators and owners of fishing and aquaculture workboats, whether trawlers, potting or harvesting vessels, or feeders, can benefit from our range of inboard, outboard, and hybrid drive systems motors with power ranging from 2kW to 2000kW. These motors deliver cost-effective operations and reduced emissions in locations of natural beauty.

All our units offer the user low maintenance, reduced fuel costs and operational savings.

With electric propulsion, you can operate in silence, with zero emissions, or enjoy reduced fuel costs and quieter operations with a hybrid system that still works for your duty cycle at sea.

Benefits

Case study: Electric propulsion system for GM7M hull

Bellmarine’s electric motor, combined with a battery and genset, provides a clean and efficient propulsion solution for vessels under 8 meters. This advanced system enhances operational efficiency and environmental compatibility, making it a great alternative to traditional engines.

Vessel type: GM7M inshore fishing vessel
Vessel length: 6.95m
Beam: 2.85m

Future Marine Propulsion Configurations: Fully Electric, Series Hybrid, and Parallel Hybrid

Marine Fully Electric

Fully Electric

Eliminate the main diesel engine, and
cut fuel costs and emissions, with an fully electric system. The vessel is driven by an electric motor which is powered by batteries only and coupled to prop-shaft or drive unit.

Series Hybrid

The traditional diesel engine is replaced by an electric motor, which draws power from an onboard genset or from batteries in combination with the genset, for extended range.

Parallel Hybrid

Pair the diesel engine with an electric motor. This configuration takes advantage of both, allowing for diesel-only, electric-only, peak shaving, and power boost operation.

I have a diesel engine can I just add an electric motor to make my vessel hybrid?

You will need an electric motor, controller, and battery pack with additional ancillary products in order to make your vessel hybrid. There is no one size fits all solution, so we work with you and our suppliers to build a package that is suitable for your vessels specifications and performance requirements.

What if my vessel does not have the space or weight allowance to have the necessary batteries onboard for the speed and power requirements?

It is possible to use a low emission genset as a range extender with the electric propulsion system. This would become a series hybrid setup where the genset charges the batteries when needed and the batteries power the motor. You can significantly increase the range of the vessel whilst maintaining low noise and emissions.

What warranty is there on the electric motors and battery packs?

The typical warranty period is 24 months, however, this can vary depending on the manufacturer.

The conversion to electric will save space and sometimes weight, it will allow a much cleaner area in the engine compartment and give your vessel a new lease of life! You can also choose to keep your diesel engine and convert it to a parallel hybrid system giving you the benefit of diesel power when needed alongside quiet emission-free electric power.

Electric and hybrid conversions are becoming increasingly popular and MIT can provide support during the entire project from design through to installation and after-sales support.
