Gearbox: ZF63A
Ilfracombe Costal Cruises, a coastal and wildlife tour operator based in North Devon, returned their ZF Marine ZF63A gearbox to us for survey and inspection. On receipt, initial checks showed levels of dirty oil and a build-up on the casing when drained.
Both input and output shafts were rotating freely and independently of each other. The neutral switch was bench tested electrically and manually, proving it was operational.
After complete disassembly, all significant components and bearings were seen to be in a serviceable condition. The input shaft and output flange required a slight polish around the seal diameter. A slight step was found in the clutch shaft piston ring grooves, meaning step removal was needed.
Both clutch packs were found to have slightly polished sintered plates which reduces their coefficient of friction and effectiveness in locking up the respective clutch groups. Replacement friction plates were needed for the repair.
The gearbox was serviced and repaired by our expert team of engineers using genuine OEM parts and, prior to its return to the customer, underwent a full hydraulic analysis test.
The unit was fully operational and could be reinstalled onto the vessel.
