At MIT, we pride ourselves on being a leader in the bespoke development of future propulsion system design for the commercial marine industry. Our expertise in developing advanced and efficient solutions is exemplified by our recent collaboration with a marine systems engineering and manufacturing company, which sought support with a diesel-electric propulsion system proposal for an amphibious vehicle.
Project Overview:
In this project, we were asked to provide support with our expert insights into the equipment needed for a hybrid propulsion system that met the complex demands of amphibious operation and delivered performance and reliability. Our proposed solution included the following key components:
- 2 x Bellmarine Torquemaster 100kW Motors: Designed to deliver robust power and torque, and with an inbuilt reduction gearbox, this specific product ensures optimal performance in both land and water environments, delivering efficiency and reliability to the system.
- Advanced Controls: The advanced control system we quoted uses the latest technology, including SAE J1939 protocol and CAN BUS 2.0B data link, for precise and responsive propulsion management.
- 2 x 141kWh Battery Packs: These high-capacity battery packs offer extended operational range and endurance, allowing the vehicle to perform demanding tasks without frequent recharging. The advanced battery technology ensures long-term reliability and safety.
- 2 x 110kW High Capacity Battery Chargers: To complement the battery packs, we included high-capacity chargers that enable rapid and efficient recharging, minimising downtime and maximising operational availability.
- 2 x Bellmarine 75kW Motors: Additional motors to drive the central hydraulics system to maximise on land performance and match the vessel’s onboard electrical scheme.
Client Feedback:
We received positive feedback from our client regarding our contribution to the propulsion systems study. Matt Cherry, Project Lead and Senior Systems Engineer shared his thoughts on our collaboration:
“I want to express my gratitude for your contribution to the overall hybrid proposal. Your expertise was instrumental in our propulsion systems study. While it is disappointing that the project will not move forward with the hybrid system, I look forward to future opportunities to collaborate. Having reached out to a number of suppliers, you were (by far) the most personable and knowledgeable, so I will know who exactly to come to on future projects!”
Our Range of Future Propulsion Solutions:
Beyond the Bellmarine inboard and outboard electric propulsion drives, we also work with the Twin Disc MGE series which caters to electric and serial hybrid propulsion solutions from 200kW to 1600kW, depending on configuration and duty cycle. These advanced systems are designed to enhance efficiency, reduce emissions, and offer flexibility in various operational environments.
In addition to our world class products, our specialist project engineering team collaborate with industry partners and academic institutions to explore innovative designs and materials, ensuring our solutions not only meet today’s needs but also anticipate future challenges .
