MIT Launch Seaworker Thrusters
22/05/2013
Marine & Industrial Transmissions (MIT) have launched a new range of AC Electric Thrusters, called the Seaworker. The new thruster is a result of a further collaboration between CMC Marine and MIT.
The new thrusters are designed mainly for commercial vessels. Providing AC state of the art powered thrusters from 18 to 130kW they can either be retro fitted or included in new build.
The installation of the thrusters is designed to be as smooth as possible as the Seaworker is powered by a genset installed on board meaning that additional power sources are not required. The thrusters also eliminate the need for messy, complicated and high maintenance hydraulics and the associated piping that would require. The units are compact with the overall volume being 30% less than a standard thruster and 60% less weight by using new generation electrical motors housed within compact unit dimensions.
The Seaworker has been very carefully designed at every stage and the unit uses many advanced industrial components. To ensure the propeller remains watertight there are triple seals on the propeller shaft. The Seaworker has dual counter rotating propellers and custom made helicoidal gears. To reduce drag to a minimum the thruster has been hydro-dynamically designed. The compact thruster unit is also supplied with aesthetically pleasing, ergonomically designed and proportional helm control levers.
When operating the Seaworker has a minimal noise level, as well as requiring very little maintenance due to the long component lifetime. Comparable to hydraulic versions the Seaworker has improved efficiency and so far has proved to be very reliable and efficient on vessels they have been installed on.
MIT Chairman Geoff Pearce commented, “The new product is a first for MIT, as this will be their own branded product, but it complements the many marine brands that MIT represent very well. Our team of service engineers have all been trained on the product and so far we are delighted with the results.”
The Seaworker Thrusters by MIT will be available on display at the Seawork show 25th – 27th June on stand A28a. ![]()
